Have you ever looked at your family photos and thought: “I need to get these organized.”
Maybe you have thousands of photos on your phone. Boxes of printed photos in a closet. Old family photos you inherited. Pictures scattered across computers, hard drives, memory cards and cloud accounts.
And every time you think about getting organized, it feels like a huge project.
Where do you even start?
What should you keep?
What should you delete?
Which folders should you create?
What should you do with all those duplicates?
It’s easy to believe that the goal is to create a perfectly organized photo collection. But after years of helping families with their photos, I’ve come to believe there’s a better goal: A healthy photo collection.

What is a healthy photo collection?
A healthy photo collection isn’t necessarily perfectly organized. In fact, it might still have some messy folders, duplicates, photos you haven’t sorted yet, and years that need some attention. That’s okay.
A healthy photo collection is one that allows you to do the things that matter most.
🔎You can find your photos.
When you want to find the pictures from your daughter’s graduation, your family vacation, or your parents’ anniversary, you have a reasonable way to find them.
You don’t need to be able to instantly locate every photo you’ve ever taken.
You just need to be able to find the photos that matter to you.
🛡️Your photos are protected.
Your important memories aren’t living in just one place.
If your phone is lost, your computer crashes, or something happens to your home, you have another copy of the photos that matter.
Organization is helpful, but protection comes first. A beautifully organized photo collection that isn’t backed up isn’t a healthy photo collection.
📖You can use your photos.
Your photos aren’t meant to spend their entire lives sitting in a camera roll or on a hard drive.
A healthy photo collection makes it easier to print photos, create photo books, share pictures with family, tell stories, and bring old memories back into your life.
❤️You enjoy your photos.
This might be the most important one.
Your photos are part of your family’s story.
They’re there to help you remember the people you love, the places you’ve been, the milestones you’ve celebrated, and all those ordinary moments that you didn’t realize would become important.
The goal of organizing isn’t to create beautifully organized files. It’s to make your memories easier to find, protect and enjoy.
You don’t have to organize everything
This is where I think we get stuck. We look at a collection of 10,000 – or 50,000 or 100,000 – photos and think: “I have to deal with all of these.” No wonder it feels overwhelming!
But you don’t. You can start with one small group.
Ten printed photos.
One folder on your computer.
One old memory card.
The photos from one vacation.
Or simply figuring out where your main photo collection lives.
One small improvement is still an improvement.
And once you make one small improvement, you can make another. Over time, those small changes create something much more valuable than a perfectly organized collection:
They create a photo collection that works for you.
Perfect organization isn’t the goal
There will always be photos that need attention. New photos will be added. Life will happen. You’ll take more pictures. You might discover an old box of photos in the basement or inherit another album from a family member.
Your photo collection will never be completely “finished.”
And that’s okay.
Instead of asking: “How do I finally get all my photos organized?”
Try asking: “What would make my photo collection healthier?”
Maybe it’s setting up a backup.
Maybe it’s getting photos off your phone.
Maybe it’s identifying the people in an old family album.
Maybe it’s creating a place for your favourite photos.
Maybe it’s finally printing the pictures you’ve been meaning to print.
There is no single right answer.
The right next step is the one that makes your photos a little easier to find, a little safer, or a little more enjoyable.
Think about your photos like you think about your health
We try to keep ourselves healthy. We know that small choices – eating a little better, getting some exercise, getting enough sleep – can add up over time.
Your photo collection can work the same way.
You don’t need to spend an entire weekend “getting healthy.” You build healthy habits gradually.
Your photos are no different. Small steps. Regular attention. Progress over perfection. And unlike a giant organizing project that you might abandon halfway through, small steps are something you can actually keep doing.
Start with one question
If your photos feel overwhelming right now, don’t ask yourself:
“How am I ever going to organize all of this?”
Instead, ask:
“What is one thing I could do today that would make my photos healthier?”
Maybe it’s a five-minute task.
Maybe it’s something you’ve been putting off.
Maybe it’s simply finding out where your photos are stored.
Whatever you choose, let that be enough.
Because you don’t need to finish your photos.
You just need to make them a little healthier.
And then take the next small step.
