August Tip – Capture Pictures Now

This pandemic is a historic event. People will ask you what it was like during these times. Capture some of your daily life to help share the stories. We will all be busier in the weeks to come so make sure you’ve documented some of the pandemic related things that happened this summer – wearing masks, waiting 2m apart, shopping once a week, working from home – whatever it is that has been different for you. Add some details in the metadata of your photos so you will remember what it was like.

Download your Photos Regularly

Ideally, we would all be downloading our photos every week (or month) – but these schedules seldom stay in place long. I prefer to download my pictures on a seasonal basis as it tends to be how I use my cameras. The big DSLR camera is pulled out for Christmas, Halloween, Birthdays and Back to School pictures – I seldom carry it around on our weekly adventures.  I will be taking the Back to School pictures this week then downloading them right away – along with any pictures I took over the summer.

It comes down to a matter of risk. I am not willing to risk the Back to School pictures sitting in the camera without a back up copy for very long, so I’m motivated to download them quickly. The risk of losing these photos motivates me much more effectively than a scheduled date on my calendar.

I’m using these seasonal markers to download my kids’ photos and videos from their phones as well. They are willing to hand over their phones a few times a year so I can download them. I let them choose the photos and videos to keep and add them to our collection. We enjoy looking back on the goofy things they captured over the years. Downloading their phones “regularly” helps me streamline my overall organizing process because I will have all their photos and videos from 2020 downloaded and ready to go when I begin organizing our full collection of 2020 pictures. So much easier!
